Volunteer Day 2018

Our volunteer day this year was extra special for me and many others on our team, as we were able to help out right in Manayunk’s famous Pretzel Park for an afternoon.

“Pretzel Park?” you might be thinking. The official name of the space had been Manayunk Park since its creation in 1929, but due to the pretzel shape of the sidewalks and a vendor who used to sell soft pretzels there, it was officially changed to Pretzel Park in 2004 and a large metal pretzel statue now greets everyone who walks up its entryway steps.

As a Manayunk resident, I walk through Pretzel Park several times a day to and from Main Street and our office. The park is also home to a variety of events, including one of the rotating Parks on Tap, weekly Saturday Farmers’ Markets all summer, live music and other festivals throughout the year.

It was a perfect sunny day and our group did everything from weeding and raking leaves to mulching the dog park and planting flowers and shrubs.

When deciding what to do for our volunteer event this year, I was excited when Friends of Pretzel Park — a coalition of local groups and park advocates — said that they were up for working with us. The member groups are the Manayunk Neighborhood Council, the Manayunk Development Corporation, Schuylkill Project/Destination Schuylkill River, and the Spiral Bookcase. This team of people is extremely passionate about what they do (just like we are!) and we had a fun time collaborating with them.

A huge thanks to all of our employees and everyone who made the day so special. Until next year!
